How To Patent An Idea On Your Own

In the process of patenting, money is going to be spent. This procedure isn’t going to be that fast and easy; actually, it will take a long time and a large amount of money. However, there are some tips that one can follow so that money can be saved. One of these tips is by doing the patenting on your own. A person with a brain can do it by himself, and if this can be done, hiring an attorney is no longer needed. Attorneys cost too much money, and if you are capable of doing this then why not try. Here is how to patent an idea on your own.

The number one thing that one will need to do is to keep track or record of one’s invention. Remember to record dates and the characteristics of the invention. Making a prototype or a model can be very useful which can be affirmed by witnesses. This needs to be confirmed if the invention is qualified for a patent protection. Thinking of the idea is not enough. One must of course make sure that the invention works and that it is one of a kind. After that, assess the commercial potential of the invention.

These are important because precious money and time will be spent in the process. Hence, before rushing into the idea of getting a patent, be sure that the idea or invention stands a chance of getting patented. The fourth thing that one will need to do is doing a patent research. This will help in the decision making because in this process, you will see whether there is another person who has developed the same idea. That is why speed is vital; own that idea before someone else does. The fifth and final thing that one will need to do is to prepare the application and file it.

After doing all these steps, the application will go through a gestation or pending period. Soon enough and provided all the elements are novel, you will get the patent you need and want.
